Early Christmas Shopping at the Metro 35th Anniversary Sale

I previously announced that Metro Department Store is having a sale this weekend, and this time around, I’m sharing ideas and stuff I got for my loved ones for their Christmas gifts!

For the Wanderlust

I found these really cute printed hard case luggages and they’re on sale for 20% off! From at 3k+ down to Php 2475 for the smallest one.

There’s also these sleek black and silver hardcases that are also on sale for 1,399!

Plus organizers and packing cubes for just 99 pesos!

For the Fashionista

I’d definitely get this shirt dress for my mom. She’s into the patch and embroidery trend lately, and would rock this in a heartbeat.

When I saw this frilly skirt, I was thinking of buying it for myself or for my officemate 😂. Dince anything with frou frou is alaso tending lately, ruffles, layers, frills, this would also be a hit.

Another gift suggestion are these free size shorts! They’re on sale for only 149 each, so I got a lot, perfect for Kris Kingle, monita monito, etc. They’re drawstring and stetchable, and look like they were bought from Uniqlo/Giordano, definitely a lot of value for money.

For the Kids

Huge stuffed toys on sale! I loved that Fluffy Teddy bear because it was big and super sale!

Seeing these Powerpuff Girls neck pillows reminded me so much of my childhood! Got one for one of my young cousins. They’re on sale for 20% off!

This was my favorite find in the Kids’ toys section, big sets! When I was a kid, I loved opening big gifts because that meant I was getting toys instead of the usual clothes. I hated getting clothes as a kid. LOL. Now I love getting clothes as gifts, as long as they’re my style.

Take this one, a nice dollhouse complete with toy furniture, and it’s a big box! Definitely something I would consider giving to godchildren. It’s almost 50% off, and has great quality too.

For the Fitness Buff

I was surprised to see how affordable these bikes were, so if your friend or relative is looking into a new fitness activity, gifting them with a bike would be a good nudge.

Or you could give them nice workout clothes instead! I always feel excited to go to the gym when I’m in a cute outfit.

Plus, Metro has really nice brands like adidas and Nike, so you’d have lots of options.

For the Co-workers / Classmates

I can’t count how many times I’ve lost a water bottle, and these things are so useful! I always bring one in my travels because drinking water is expensive in some countries so I fill up my bottle at the hotel before going around the city.

These are great for gifting too because everyone needs it, for the office, school, gym, etc.

For the Beauty Addicts

Metro has a great range of beauty products, cosmetics and skin care items for your friends obsessed with beauty. They’ve got great bundles for Christmas gifts too, like these sets from Cathy Doll.

For the Relatives

The home section is probably my favorite, because Metro has a really nice selection. This cooler is something I would suggest giving to relatives who love going to local trips to the beach or mountainside, or even for a simple picnic.

The glassware and beddings available are nice too. Loved the prints on those blankets and bedsheets!

For the Home Improvement Fanatics

My mom is obsessed with organization lately, so I bought her some of these plastic boxes to store away some of our stuff!

During the sale, some of the furniture were even up for Buy 1 Take 1 promo! I remember seeing a couple getting a lot of bed cushions from Uratex because they were cheap and Buy 1 Take 1!

This was probably my favorite item at the home section. Isn’t this dresser just pretty???

Bonus: Gift Wrapping and Christmas Decors!

They also free gift wrapping for every minimum purchase, and you get to choose from different colors and sizes!

So what do you guys think about my shopping finds? any other suggestions? Let me know about your finds during the sale! Use the hashtag #Metro25Years when posting so I can see your finds!

More Shrimp Dishes at Johnny Kahuku (Review + Menu)

I’ve blogged about Johnny Kahuku before,
and I loved dining there ever since. This time around Johnny Kahuku’s
Hawaiian Shrimp House rolled out new stuff for their menu, geared for
the corporate lunch or dinner crowd. The additions include shrimp
baskets and buckets, Hawaiian Trucks, and Solo Shrimp Trucks, perfect
for those seeking a filling lunch set.

Shrimp Baskets

Coconut and Pineapple Glazed Shrimp Basket (Php 248)

  • coconut crusted crispy shrimp tossed in pineapple glaze
  • I was honestly surprised at how the coconut and pineapple worked so well together. SInce it’s on the sweet side, it’s actually also perfect for families and kids with picky palates

Salt and Pepper Shrimp Basket (Php 228)

  • deep fried crispy shrimps sauteed in bell pepper, salt, and five spices
  • probably the safest choice in the menu. it reminded me of the salt and pepper flavored streetfood in Taipei

Honey Garlic Shrimp Basket (Php 248)

  • buttered garlic shrimp tossed in honey butter and crispy garlic
  • this was soooo good! The perfect balance between sweet and salty! It was the crowd favorite and seriously addicting

Crispy Drunken Shrimp Basket (Php 228)

  • crispy gin marinated shrimps drizzled with butter and crispy garlic
  • if the honey garlic was the crowd favorite, this one was my personal favorite. The shrimps were perfectly seasoned, with just a hint of gin, sort of like beer battered fish, with a cleaner taste

Johnny Kahuku’s really know how to treat their shrimp. The shrimps were very crispy even when they sat long (We took photos for more than 30 minutes) and had great flavor.

They also have another shrimp basket that we didn’t get to try, the Mixed Seafood and Tempura Basket (Php 399) which included
an assorted

tempura of oysters, shrimps, fish, and crabsticks, and served with sriracha aioli and tempura sauce.

I also love how they have this cute condiment toolkit that houses utensils, bibs, and condiments like sriracha hot sauce and vinegar, perfect for pairing with their Hawaiian dishes.

Hawaiian Trucks

These and the solo shrimp trucks are good for solo diners because you get great value for money meals.

Aloha Shrimp and Fish Skewers (Php 175)

  • shrimp and white fish with pineapple, onion and peppers served with Hawaiian Fried Rice
  • the shrimp was juicy and not overcooked, which is great since grilled shrimp dishes tend to be on the gummy side

Samoan Pork Barbecue (Php 175)

  • hickory barbecue pork skewers with grilled pineapple, sauteed vegetables and hawaiian fried rice
  • tender, juicy, tangy and sweet, this one would fit well with the Filipino palate

Huli Huli Chicken Skewers (Php 175)

  • Huli Huli glazed chicken skewers with grilled pineapple, stir fried vegetables and Hawaiian fried rice
  • just like the pork barbecue, this one was grilled just right

Root Beer Glazed American Ribs (Php 225)

  • root beer glazed twice cooked American barbecue ribs, spiced corn and plain rice
  • for this one, I honestly couldn’t tell that it was marinated with root beer, but it was pretty good nonetheless

Hawaiian Pit Roasted Chicken (Php 195)

  • lemongrass marinated chicken quarter with stir fried vegetables and coconut Hawaiian rice
  • This reminded me a lot of Aristocrat’s chicken barbecue, except this one is sweeter

All of their Hawaiian Trucks have pretty generous servings and a heaping mound of rice, so you really are indulging when you get one of these.

Sweet Endings (Dessert!)

I was very delighted to see that they offered Acai berry bowls because not a lot of places in Manila offer these, and at good price points too!

Macai Bowls – Mango Acai Berry fruit bowls

Banana Chocolate and Peanut Butter Macai Bowl (Php 238)

  • this one was very decadent and rich, perfect for those with a sweet tooth

Strawberry Smoothie Macai Bowl (Php 258)

  • very refreshing, I wouldn’t mind having this often!

Mango Yoghurt Macai Bowl (Php 268)

  • I’d say this was the perfect mix of our and sweet, perfect way to end a shrimp feast!

All in all I loved Johnny Kahuku’s new offerings. What do you think? Is it a thumbs up?

Teeth Whitening at The Smile Bar BGC (Review + Prices)

They say you’re never fully dressed without a smile. A smile speaks
volumes, even if it’s just a small gesture. It’s also one of things
people remember about you after you meet. It’s not a surprise that a lot of people are very conscious of the state of their teeth, as your
pearly whites contribute to that signature smile.

I used to be huge coffee and soda drinker back in college, and now I fancy wine for social gatherings. All of these are strongly pigmented drinks, which actually contribute to the discoloration of teeth. There are other factors that affect the color of our teeth, some even have genetically yellower teeth than most. Smoking, because of tar and nicotine largely discolors teeth as well, as well as poor oral hygiene, and some medications.

It’s easy to discolor our teeth, but very difficult to whiten. I’ve already tried whitening strips before as well as bleaching by my dentist, but I found both uncomfortable.

Enter The Smile Bar, an exclusive dental whitening treatment center franchised from Hong Kong. The Smile Bar has recently opened its first flagship store in the country, and it’s in the busy district of Bonifacio Global City. The store at Uptown Parade BGC offers first class services in a modern clinic.

Simply put, The Smile Bar is a teeth whitening salon that claims to offer the
fastest and most effective system in the market. They aim to provide a quality, efficient
teeth whitening process that can be done in as fast as 20 minutes, perfect for the on-the-go lifestyle of most Filipinos.

So how does it work???

Smile Bar uses products and technology from Swedish company, Brilliant Smile. The secret is in the teeth whitening gel,
which safely removes discoloration and stains from the enamel. The LED Plasma
Light technology then activates the whitening gel and this goes on for 20 minutes, and
repeated depending on the treatment of your choice.

My The Smile Bar Teeth Whitening Experience:

Step 1: Consultation & Briefing

After comparison, my
teeth were deemed to be shade S18. Note that I already did teeth
whitening before so my shade was already lighter than average untreated teeth.

Step 2: Pre-Treatment Cleansing

The Smile Bar uses Brilliant Smile products to prep for the treatment. I had to rinse first with Brilliant Smile mouthrinse, then brushed my teeth with Brilliant Smile toothbrush and toothpaste.

After rinsing, I was asked to use the
Oral Cleansing Activator

which felt like I was using paper to wipe off excess dirt and other debris from my teeth.

Step 3: Whitening Treatment

I was asked to sit in these cute space age looking egg chairs that are surprisingly super comfortable!

And now you get to see The Smile Bar’s open secret: the teeth whitening gel. The gel is colored dark purple, because the LED Plasma Light technology that activates it works best on heavily pigmented substances. This way, the LED Plasma light will be able to fully activate the gel, so the gel can whiten efficiently as well.

This is me getting prepped:

Did you know?

Since the service takes a minimum of 20 minutes, The Smile Bar provides iPads and Bose headphones for entertainment to pass the time. They also have extra fast Wi-Fi for all customers! This helped me a lot since I had a double whitening treatment that took 40 minutes, so I could finish watching my favorite Korean shows in iFlix while waiting.

So I get my protective goggles on, get fitted with the mouthpiece with the teeth whitening gel, sit comfortably, then the attendant moves the LED Plasma light so that it hits my exposed teeth accurately.

Remember that the LED plasma light needs to be aligned with your teeth for whitening to happen, so if possible try to not move. The staff are quick to adjust the alignment when you do, but you can also hold the LED light stand when necessary.

Step 4: NanoSeal

After the treatment, there will be some microscopic spots where the discolorations used to be. These are vulnerable to new discoloration so we strongly recommend drinking only water for those first 6 hours after your treatment.

But if you don’t want the downtime, the Smile Bar also offers the NanoSeal Total+ as an add-on to your treatment. This process reinforces the enamel and seals the whiteness on your teeth. By doing this, you will be able to eat or drink anything immediately after your treatment, without risking new discoloration! No need to worry about 72-hour food, drink, and smoking restrictions.

Using a small brush
The NanoSeal Total+ is a liquid solution applied on your teeth and requires only 1 minute of your time. The product will protect your teeth and enamel instantly. Immediately after the treatment, you are free from any eating, drinking, and smoking restrictions.

However, if you do skip NanoSeal Total+ these are the restrictions to be observed 72 hours after treatment:

  • Avoid strongly colored drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine, soda
  • Avoid food that cause stains such as chocolate, and those with food coloring
  • Avoid acidic food such as tomatoes, vinegar, soy, citrus, and chili sauce as these cause tooth hypersensitivity
  • Avoid smoking
  • Do a fluoride rinse twice a day to rebuild enamel and fill any microscopic cavities

The Smile Bar Double Whitening Treatment Result

From S18, my teeth are now S12!!! That’s six shades lighter!

How long will the teeth whitening effect last?

According to The Smile Bar, your lifestyle and diet will determine
the amount of time it takes for discoloration to take place on your teeth again. You can expect to maintain whiter teeth for up to 6 months after a treatment at The Smile Bar, provided that you practice good dental hygiene. They recommended coming in regularly once
a quarter. Using their post-whitening products from Brilliant Smile regularly will help keep your teeth clean as well as maintain your bright smile.

The Verdict:

Of course I’m happy with my results! Who’d say no to six shades lighter teeth, without downtime! I was expecting sensitivity, but I experienced none of that with The Smile Bar. Whitening teeth really is as easy as popping in and out of The Smile Bar. Plus the egg chairs are comfy and the iPads and free Wi-Fi provided to pass the time will distract you from the 20-40-60 minute treatment period.

And oh, before you go for an appointment, teeth whitening
is not recommended for pregnant women (or breastfeeding mothers) and children under the age of 16. Also for people with braces, it is not recommended to have teeth whitening done as the individual brackets will interfere with the LED light activation.

All in all, I love my experience and wouldn’t mind dropping in 6 months later for a follow up treatment.

Single Whitening (20 minutes) – Php2,999
Double Whitening (40 minutes) – Php4,999

Verjandel Hotel: Cozy Staycation in the heart of Quezon City

As much as I love getting away from the city, traveling far takes time, and more expenses. In an effort to save more money but still have a relaxing getaway, I find myself opting for stay-cations instead. Especially with the recent long weekends, I wasn’t able to book a flight so off to a nearby hotel it is!

Recently, I got to stay at Verjandel Hotel, one of the newest hotels in the heart of Quezon City. They opened just last December 2016, and have been continuously improving the hotel based on their clientele.

Verjandel Hotel sits along Kalayaan Avenue in QC, having great proximity to the universities up north,

big government offices, as well as private institutions, and the popular food street Maginhawa in Teacher Village. This makes the hotel a great place to stay in, whatever your agenda may be, be it corporate, academic, recreational, or good old R&R.

Verjandel Hotel is the brainchild of three Pajarillo Siblings, the name Verjandel came from the portmanteau of their names. It’s their first foray into the F&B and Hospitality business, and based on their TripAdvisor ratings and reviews, they’re doing very well.

For this post, I’m doing a full review on my hotel experience, complete with virtual tour, as well as a quick review on the food from the in house restaurants.

The hotel lobby interiors are simple, but don’t let that fool you. Behind the sparsely decorated space are staff that give you the brightest smiles and really good service.

After checking in, we were immediately escorted to the room. We booked the Deluxe Single Room with Queen sized bed for Php 3875 for two adults, but they have an ongoing promo with 20% discount, so this one’s up for Php 3,100. Perfect for the long weekend!

Deluxe Single Room

– Queen

I actually love how simple the room is. It really is as advertised. Clean, practical, adequate, and with the right amount of natural light coming into the room.

  • Size – 280-sq-foot (26-sq-meter) room with city view
  • Internet – Free WiFi
  • Entertainment – LED television with cable channels
  • Food & Drink – Free bottled water and snacks, equipped with mini refrigerator
  • Sleep – Blackout drapes/curtains
  • Bathroom – Private bathroom, shower, room slippers, hairdryer, and free toiletries
  • Practical – Desk and phone; rollaway/extra beds available on request
  • Comfort – Air conditioning and daily housekeeping
  • Non-Smoking
  • Occupancy – Max of 3 persons
  • with basement parking

My favorite part has to be the complimentary Cheetos! I always check to see if there are complimentary bottles of water, so it was a pleasant surprise to have free snacks to go with the bottled water.

There’s a little coffee table too if you need a working area.

The bed is ultra comfy, ensuring a good night’s sleep. Plus you can request for extra blankets and pillows if needed.

This was what I loved most about the room, a beautiful view of the sunset over the city! Look at all those colors!

Unlike the usual hotel restaurants, Olivia’s Cafe serves up comfort food at affordable rates. The mains range from Php 160 (Classic Spaghetti) to Php 285 (Garlic Ginger Salmon) at generous servings.

It’s also great for gatherings and even corporate lunch outs because the food is really good and the ambience is great.

Olivia’s Cafe

I’m going to do a rundown of the dishes we had there because I think we almost had the whole menu! Haha

Appetizers and Beverages:

Photo above: Lemonade, Bacon and Mushroom Croquetas, Shrimp Thermidore

  • Beef Salpicao (Php 220) – really tender, flavorful chucks of meat!
  • Bacon and Mushroom Croquetas (Php 160 for 5 pcs) – crispy, big pieces
  • Shrimp Thermidore (Php 235) – cheesy version of shrimp gambas, prolly my favorite from everything!
  • Truffled Potato Wedges (Php 135) – really good for bar chow
  • Mushroom Cream Soup (Php 85) – very comforting

photo above: Beef Salpicao

photo above: Iced Tea, Truffled Potato wedges, mushroom cream soup

photo above: Roast Beef, Steak Tanigue, Honey Garlic Spareribs

  • Roast Beef (Php 265) – highly recommended! juicy tender pieces, with a matching flavorful gravy
  • Steak Tanigue (Php 245) – grilled fish with a tangy salty marinade
  • Honey Garlic Spareribs (Php 235) – salty sweet crispy pieces of pork
  • Meaty Lasagna (Php 190) – bechamel, meat sauce party!
  • Garlic Ginger Salmon (Php 285) – highly recommended! a big piece of salmon with a creamy tomato sauce, on top of smooth mashed potatoes! i swear it’s so worth it
  • T-Bone Steak (Php 265) – perfect for meat lovers!
  • Grilled Pork Belly (Php 235) – grilled meat with sweet and tangy marinade

photo above: Meaty Lasagna, Garlic Ginger Salmon, T-Bone Steak, Grilled Pork Belly

My top picks would be the Garlic Ginger Salmon and the Roast Beef! They’re both super good dishes if value for money is what you’re looking for.

Breakfast Buffet

The rooms have free buffet breakfast served at Olivia Cafe, but they also have all day breakfast dishes for Php 180.

The spread includes the usual silog partners: Beef Tapa, Bacon, Boneless Bangus, Longganisa, Corned Beef.

Lounge Bar

Verjandel Hotel also has its own Lounge Bar stocked full of both imported and local alcoholic beverages. They also host regular viewing parties for sports games like boxing matches and NBA finals with their huge LED TV.

The bartenders used to work for the Intercontinental Hotel, so I the cocktails are really good. They also have bar chow coming from Olivia’s Cafe like fries, etc.

Function Rooms

Because of the proximity to the big government offices in Quezon City, Verjandel is usually fully booked with conferences and seminars at their function rooms. Aside from corporate events, they also do weddings, and other celebrations.

Events Place

The rooftop is soon to be furnished with a swimming pool, so you bet you can enjoy pool parties the next time you stay at Verjandel. They also use the rooftop for events that prefer an outdoor setting.

Last February, they held a Valentines’ dinner special: 4-course menu with wine and music, plus a beautiful skyline view of the city.

V Fit Gym

The gym is the newest facility inside Verjandel Hotel. It’s open 24 hours and usage is free for in house guests. It is also open for walk-ins for a small gym usage charge.

And that’s it for my Verjandel Hotel virtual tour and review! Hope it helps you make a booking for this long weekend!!!

OFRA Manila: Your New Favorite Nude Liquid Lip (Swatch + Review)

There’s a new nude lippie in town, and it’s perfect for Filipinas!Out of all the liquid lipsticks I’ve tried, I really love OFRA’s Long Lasting Liquid Lipsticks. Believe me, I’ve been through a lot of liquid lipstick brands, and nothing beats the creamy matte texture, vanilla scent and intense color payoff that OFRA has. I already love the Pasadena and Laguna Beach shades as really great MLBB picks, but the new shade, Manila, is becoming a fast favorite.

This time around, OFRA Cosmetics has collaborated with its local official distributor, Glamourbox, to create a nude lipstick shade that’s suitable for varying Filipina skintones.

result is this beautiful OFRA MANILA nude shade. Ofra Manila on its own is already pretty, but when layered with lip pencils or other lipsticks, say a pink or peach tone, will create a soft and sweet look. While a darker mauve or berry mixed or layered in creates a more sultry and romantic look. I predict the OFRA Manila will become everyone’s favorite neutral nude!

I got the OFRA Manila Kit ala Kylie Lip Kit, matched with a Pink Lipliner, also from OFRA.

On me, it looks nude brown with a tiny hint of pink, a little lighter than cocoa brown. I tried it with the pink lipliner, and the result is a softer nude, with a bit of a rosy tone.

OFRA Manila looks different on varying skintones, just check out this video from BeautyMNL. On lighter skin, Manila looks like a rosy taupe, on medium to dark skin, it looks like a light nude brown.

Overall, I like OFRA Manila, because it’s very MLBB on me, and easy to match with different makeup looks.

OFRA Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Manila retails at Php 850 and is available in glamourbox.ph, SM Beauty and Watsons (Makati, MOA, Aura,
North Edsa and The Block), Landmark Department Store (Makati and
Trinoma), Metro Alabang, and Purebeauty on May 31, 2017. It will also be
available at beautymnl.com, calyxta.com and zalora.com.ph and
Commonthread stores by July 1, 2017.

Shaburi: Japanese hotpot in Uptown BGC (Review)

I love shabu shabu (hotpot), there’s just something about warm, hearty but healthy soup and cooking fresh ingredients easily in a tasty broth that keeps me coming back for more.

Recently, I got to try Shaburi, a Japanese hotpot franchise from Indonesia’s food concept group, Dining Innovation.

What’s unique about Shaburi is that every diner has his/her own personal hotpot stove, so you don’t have to worry about sharing your broth with other people (like in other hotpot restos), or double dipping!

For 90 minutes, diners get to enjoy unlimited servings of meat cooked in your choice of broth/soup. Shaburi has 5 different soups: Original Konbu, Sukiyaki, Soy Milk Miso, Chicken Collagen Paitan, and Hot Miso. Each diner is also entitled to an unlimited buffet spread of fresh vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, and unlimited drinks, plus dessert! Also, they recently introduced their Lunch Menu, which offers limited plates
of meat. Perfect for those looking for a lighter version to Shaburi’s
usual All You Can Meat menu.

The Shaburi Experience

The waiters here are courteous and patient, always explaining the step by step process of enjoying Japanese shabu shabu before ordering.

According to the waitstaff, this is the Shaburi way:

Step 1: Choose your MEAT

For the Lunch Set / Plate Set Menu, the Regular Shabu Set (either Tasty
Beef or Tender Pork) costs Php 399 for 1 plate of meat, and php 449 for 2
plates of meat. The Shaburi Wagyu set costs Php 535 for 1 plate and 675
for 2 plates of wagyu. Both of these sets include unlimited buffet,
drinks and dessert.

As for the All You Can Meat version, which includes unlimited meat plates, unlimited buffet, drinks, and desserts these are the rates:

  • Regular Shabu (choice of Tasty Beef and Tender Pork) Php 499
  • Special Shabu (choice of Special Beef, Tasty Beef and Tender Pork) Php 789
  • Shaburi Wagyu (choice of Shaburi Wagyu, Special Beef, Tasty Beef, and Tender Pork) Php 1,249
  • Special Wagyu (choice of Special Wagyu, Shaburi Wagyu, Special Beef, Tasty Beef, and Tender Pork) Php 1,599

For the purpose of this review, I got to try the Shaburi Wagyu, Tasty Beef, Tender Pork, and a seafood set, which they will be offering soon. See photos below:

Shaburi Wagyu

Tasty Beef

Tender Pork

Seafood Set which consists of salmon and shrimp! Soon on the Shaburi menu.

Step 2: Choose Your Hotpot Soup

The waitstaff always presents tasting samples of all 5 soups to every diner, so everyone can try before they pick their soup.

Here are Shaburi’s 5 soups:

  • Original Konbu: Japanese seaweed soup abundant with calcium and minerals. Good for children and pregnant women. Helps prevent fatigue, stress and improves stomach condition
  • Sukiyaki: Sweet & balanced soup that comes with an egg, to make the meat more tasty and flavorful
  • Soy Milk Miso: deemed the healthiest of the 5, has the golden ratio of soy milk and miso. High in proteins and vitamins, it helps in strengthening the body’s immune system
  • Chicken Collagen Paitan: Rich in collagen to help improve skin complexion
  • Hot Miso:The only spicy option among the 5. Miso has been found to help prevent stomach conditions, combat fatigue, and even help to slow down the effects of aging.

Out of the 5, only the Original Konbu has free refills, for the other 4, there is an extra charge. But if you opt to have the Original Konbu as the refill after your first serving of one of the other four, the refill is free.

As mentioned before, every diner gets a personal cooking stove and pot. Meaning you don’t have to share, or worry about double dipping, or having the taste of your broth altered with the contents of somebody else’s hotpot mix. Yay for shabu shabu lovers right?

I ended up picking the Chicken Collagen Paitan (next photo) because I liked the richness of it, and thought my veggies would taste great while cooking with this one.

Step 3: Choose your appetizers, side dishes, fresh vegetables, dipping sauces, drinks, and desserts from the Unlimited Buffet

The have a variety of vegetables, most of which are hotpot staples like Kailan.

I loved the mushroom selection the most, because they had a lot! Enoki, Golden mushroom, shiitake, etc.

They also have a nice selection for the shabu shabu sauce. I recommend getting the original shabu shabu sauce, and then adding garlic, leeks, soy sauce, and chili to taste.

They also have some sushi rolls and some cooked food, like battered fried fish, fried corn balls, gyoza, karaage, chicken wings, and udon carbonara.

At the end of the buffet are the desserts like fresh fruits, and some cakes and panna cotta. Not in photo are the unlimited drinks like iced tea, lemonade, coffee and tea.

Step 4: Cook and Enjoy!

I always put the noodles in first because they tend to cook the longest, then I follow with corn and other veggies, mushrooms, and last the meat. The meat takes just a few seconds to cook, so watch out if you’re not a fan of overcooked meat. 🙂

I usually just dip the meat in the boiling soup for a few seconds until the meat is sufficiently cooked, then I dip it into my personal shabu shabu sauce concoction, then on top of a spoon of rice, then enjoy! With a few sips of the soup in between.

Again the soup has free refills of the Original Konbu, but Shaburi charges extra for the refills of the other four soups. I opted to get the free Original Konbu soup refill after for a different experience. The collagen tends to be a bit rich, so I felt that it was too much to get a second refill of it.

Anyhow, I had a great time at Shaburi. You definitely get more value for money if you choose the All You Can Meat menu, but you can opt for the plate set if you’re not into pigging out.

I also recommend going in groups even if the hotpot stove is personal so you can poke fun at each other’s cooking skills. Or if you’re more of a solo diner, go ahead, enjoy your own Shaburi hotpot experience without being conscious of eating out of a big pot. 🙂

Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is around the corner, and I’m so excited! I already have some surprises in store for mom, and because I won’t be able to do everything, I’m sharing all of my gift ideas for Mother’s Day 2017!

What have you got planned this weekend? Whether you’re bringing out your mom, or anyone who stands in as your mom, like say a dad who doubles as both of your parents, or an uncle or aunt who fulfills the role, among others, I’m sure you can get at least one idea from this list.

Here goes:

Mother’s Day Gift Suggestions:

1. Send them a beautifully made edible arrangement

My mom isn’t a fan of flowers like I am, but she loves fruits a lot, so I’m giving her one of the fruit bouquets!

This particular arrangement is called ‘Mama’ priced at 950 each and includes chocolates covered apples and bananas, big juicy strawberries and lots of grapes. I personally ate the fruits already to test it out and see if my mom would potentially like receiving one, and the strawberries are really sweet, plus the chocolate coating is good and decadent without the guilt, because yay fruits!

You can order one online via Fruits in Bloom’s website or check them out on Instagram @fruitsinbloom.

2. Throw a Sunday brunch party in their honor

And have a mini reunion too! These days I’m having difficulty seeing all the members of my family together in one place because everyone is so busy! My sister is taking her accountancy board exam soon, my brother is currently a medical student intern at the UST hospital and my parents are busy with the business, so it’s really hard to get everyone in one place at the same time! Mother’s Day brunch is the perfect way to get us all together and catch up.

Got some inspiration from Pinterest and making pastel colored baked goods to go with the floral fun colorful brunch theme I have in mind.

3. Pamper them with a spa session

Our mom’s are busy, really busy, that they often forget to sit down, relax and just enjoy. Which is why a sparty is a great idea for on-the-go, super hands on, crazy busy moms.

You can do a DIY sparty at home with mud masks and sheet masks from your nearby Watsons stores (lots of savings for SM Advantage Card holders!!), or go out to a spa or salon for a massage, mani-pedi, or a new hairdo for less DIY. Salons like Beauty and Butter and Make Me Blush Nail Spa and Beauty Lounge have great value for money packages (think foot spa + mani pedi) plus nice interiors that will get your mom relaxed in no time.

Whichever your preference, mom would love it because aside from the pampering, you’ll get to bond over funny masks faces, nail polish colors, the small talk in between, and maybe even some long overdue catch up on life. This might be the right time to update you on how you’ve been lately, so she doesn’t worry as much, and realize that her kids are doing great.

Benefit’s Bold is Beautiful Brow Wax Challenge

If you’re going out for that much needed brow salon sesh, consider having them done at a Benefit Brow Bar near you. For the whole month of May, all income from every brow wax session will be donated to Benefit’s beneficiary, Mano Amiga, as part of the global Bold is Beautiful project by Benefit. The project aims to empower women and girls to have Big Dreams and Bold Moves, and Mano Amiga does just that by doing livelihood workshops and providing education for them.

As an added treat, if you purchase a Benefit Brow Wax Gift Card from BeautyMNL, you get a complementary upper lip or chin wax along with a Gimme Brow mini, until supplies last. That’s a lot of value for helping out in Benefit’s Bold is Beautiful project. I’m sure mom will appreciate having brows on fleek while helping out another mom who will benefit from Mano Amiga’s livelihood workshop.

4. Get crafty with a little DIY

I saw a video of this going viral on Facebook, and it was pretty cool for a pop up card, so I just had to include it in this list!

Or if you find this DIY too complicated (Watch it here), You can just make a handwritten love note sharing how much you appreciate her. Whichever floats your boat, go for it!

5. Go on a shopping date

No one is immune to a little retail therapy, especially if it’s tabbed on someone else! Treat your mom to a few things, or volunteer your dad as tribute at the cashier (haha).

Make Your Own Havaianas (MYOH) 2017

The first leg of MYOH 2017 is happening this May 12-14, 2017, just in time for Mother’s Day! This year’s theme is 90′s, so expect to see 90′s gadgets, candies, comics and whatnot at the venue.

I already have my own commemorative pair (another post on which pins I got), thanks to the recent media launch, but I’m sure you and mom, along with the rest of your family, will have fun customizing your own Havaianas pair. Also get in a few 90′s jabs in, like when your mom would prevent you from getting your favorite RingPop, Pushpop, or bubblegum tape back when you were a kid.

Or share how you miss playing pixelated games like Pac Man on the old Family Computer, or how you would argue with siblings on whose turn it is to play. Teehee

The limited edition pins are tooo adorable, some of them are even glow in the dark! For more details on how to join MYOH 2017, and when the other legs and locations are, check out the website.

Now how about finding mom her signature scent, if she still doesn’t have one, or getting her a new luxurious perfume?

Dior’s New Fragrance: J’Adore in Joy

J’adore In Joy, Dior’s newest offering from its vast fragrance line, is a perfume that literally “smells” of joy. According to the girls over at the Dior Boutique in SM Makati, it’s a scent that would give you instant pleasure, invigorating your love of life.

The J’Adore in Joy is unique in that it has salty facet to it, infused with a flower custom-crafted in Grasse.
The floral-fruity-salty perfume has both the Ylang-Ylang essence from Madagascar and Jasmine Sambac. These floral notes are brightened with the refreshing Fleur de Sel for the salty and finished with the fruity from a juicy peach. In a nutshell: A light and salty nectar, as refreshing as a beautiful, ripe fruit. That, is the J’Adore in Joy.

Aside from the perfume, it comes with a hair mist that smells divine. One spray is all it takes and your hair will give off a beautiful scent when you swoosh your hair from left to right. I swear, having great smelling hair just gives an extra bounce to every step.

If your mom’s not a fragrance person, you can opt to get her a lipstick for a pop of color to her complexion. Dior also just released the new Dior Addict Lacquer Sticks, promising moisture, shine, and lasting power in one swipe. Also, the lippies are Jennifer Lawrence approved, if that helps. The shade Be Dior is a huge hit, or if your mom likes deeper shades, the Sauvage is a good idea.

Dior stores are located in SM Makati, Rustan’s
Department Store Shangri-La Plaza Mall, SM Aura, and Alabang Town

Gadgets for the feeling-Millenial Mom

If your mom is anything like mine, she loves browsing the internet for
cute baby photos and videos, plus streaming her K-Drama favorites. My
mom’s current obsession is the cute Scarlet Snow Belo, whose videos my
mom watches everyday! Because of watching online videos most of the
time, my mom always runs out of battery, so I’m thinking of gifting her another powerbank (Yes, she already has one, but she watches so much,
even one depletes easily). New cases are always welcome because mom has to protect her new favorite gadget.

Because a healthy lifestyle is also trending, why not get mom a FitBit? The new FitBit Charge HR2′s colorways are really nice, and I’m eye-ing the rose gold one too. It’s also a great way to help mom track her heart rate, if she does start exhibiting symptoms for some lifestyle diseases. My mom’s getting to senior citizen age in a few year’s time, so she’s into a lot of walking, dancing, and a little exercise when she has the time, so she would appreciate that FitBit.

All the gadgets above cane be found in any Digital Walker outlets nationwide.

That’s it for my gift ideas, how about you?

Always remember that no matter what you get your mother on Mother’s Day, what’s still most important is the time your spend together. Let your mom know she is appreciated, be it Mother’s day or any regular day. That will always put a smile on her face.

Salute to all the moms everywhere! I can only hope to be as awesome as you guys are when I become one.

Happy Mother’s Day!!!
