When I feel the need to dress up for something simple during the day, but still makes a statement, I always rely on formula dressing. This formula is based on: the blazer, top, and shorts combo, amped with a few extra details here and there.
It’s a foolproof technique really, whichever way you look at it, it’s stylish, and is loud enough to stand out in a normal crowd. This set for example, is what I wore to an interview. Alyssa and I were asked to be the interviewees for a friend’s Communication subject, as it was about fashion blogging. Because we had to wear something that was smart casual, but still fun and embodied my style, I decided on wearing pastels.
Yes, you have seen this blazer before, namely here, and here, and I still abuse it to this day. It’s just so versatile, certainly a piece that would go a long way.
About these socks, don’t you just love the cute little pink hearts in that gray background? It was soooo adorable.
I promised you guys an explanation as to why I’ve been wearing white a lot lately, and here goes.
*Note, this is pretty emotional and close to my heart, so if you aren’t into that, jump to my other posts instead.
2013 hasn’t exactly been the greatest for me, for one, last January 4, 2013, my grandmother, my Ah-ma (in Fukien) passed away. I grew up with her, and lived in the same home from the time I was born, until my freshman year in highschool. We moved to a residence closer to my highschool then, but we still visited my grandparents frequently even after.
Having said that, it was quite a blow to my heart, when my father informed my siblings and I of what happened. I cried a lot. At first I didn’t know I was crying already, what started out as a long silent tearfest, went on to sobbing, and then to full on crying my heart out. I didn’t know what to do, it was the first time I had lost someone I love. It was the sort of pain I had never felt before. On the other hand, I was a bit relieved too, when I learned of how she died, it wasn’t violent, it was a peaceful passing, and she breathed her last breath, with all her might, as narrated by her caregiver.
We were all in shock, as we (the whole family up to my cousins) just saw her on New Year’s Eve. She was very lively, cracking a few jokes, teasing us, even when she couldn’t remember who we were. Her memory was failing already you see, all she could remember were memories from her childhood, and still thought she lived with her parents, when she was in fact living with my grandfather.
As I am writing this post, I realize that tears are streaming out again, as I truly did love her. Even when she was annoying back then, you know how grandparents sometimes want extra attention, yeah like that. But I’d go back to the days when my sister and I would accompany her in the wee hours of the morning to Luneta, back when she was still strong enough for Tai Chi, and she would buy us anything we wanted, from taho, to ma zhang, to dirty ice cream, anything that was for sale in Luneta. We only had to ask, and she would give them to us.
Ah-ma was very simple and traditional, she spent half of her childhood in China, and most of her life here in the country. Her only luxuries in life were jewelry, most of which were heirloom pieces from her family, some from her endowment from her wedding with my grandfather, and some bought from wandering around Binondo. All of which, she had once told me, would be distributed to the families of her children and her grandchildren, once we were to be wed. In fact, most of the jewelry I wore from when I as an infant up to my early childhood, were from her. She had great taste too, picking out cute, classic pieces for us all.
Her daily routine would consist of praying to the Buddhist gods, praying to her in laws (deceased), in the altar room in their home. In Chinese/Buddhist holidays, she would facilitate the arrangement of the alay. She was the full time housewife, tending to the garden, overseeing the household chores, commanding the household help. She was very traditional too, and made sure that we observed them as well. It is because of this that I am and will be wearing white for 100 days, since January 4, 2013. White is the traditional mourning color for the Chinese. Usually, the all white wardrobe is observed for 49 days, however it is on the discretion of the family to extend that to 100 days. In our case, my aunt (my dad’s eldest sister) decided on the 100 days to be observed by the family. After those 100 days, we are allowed to wear other colors, but only the cool tones, no red, no happy colors until about a year. Traditionally, it takes up to 2 years for the family to not wear red, as red is a very happy color for the Chinese. So when you see me wearing red, that’s prolly one of my older photos, or it’s something school/work related. Yes, uniform and work requirements are exempted from this rule, but we have to wear a black mourning pin. There are also a number of traditions that we are observing, but I won’t post them here anymore, else this will turn into a culture lesson. The wardrobe thing is that bit of tradition that I wanted to share with you guys.
If you guys were wondering, the paper with the gold foil is what we fold, then burn, during the wake, as money, the money my grandmother will use in the after-life. We burn these every death anniversary (I would always observe my Ah-ma supervising our maids in burning the paper when it was her in law’s death anniversary), on All Saint’s day, and related holidays.
As you see here, we stamp each sheet with my grandmother’s Chinese name as well.
I miss her, terribly. I haven’t fully moved on, but I’m getting there. this serves as my reminder, that life is indeed, too short. Always live in the moment, don’t dwell on your mistakes, make the most out of each waking day.

In vino nobis veritas. In English that translates to, “in wine there is truth to be found for us.” I actually remember quoting this from a movie, but I can’t remember which one. If you do, enlighten me so I can update this post. The other Latin phase, In vino veritas, has a better translation, “in wine there is truth”, for the prupose of this blog, I picked the first phrase to start out this post because that was the one I heard in the movie, and it has a better ring to it, yes?
Speaking of wine, meet Moscatel de Valencia, my newest discovery, and my current favorite. I found it at Marks & Spencer, when I attended their wine tasting event (which I spoke about here) a few weeks ago. About this new favorite wine of mine, it’s actually a dessert wine, so it’s sweet, a bit thicker than your usual whites, and with 5% alcohol. There’s also a hint of fruit flavors, with grape and apricot being its primary components. This makes it a refreshing wine to take after a hearty meal, and I loved it right after tasting it. That’s big coming from a huge tequila drinker like me. I don’t fancy wines much, mainly because most of my friends prefer whiskey, vodka, or beer. The only times that I get to drink wine are at weddings, my grandparent’s birthdays, or at a food sampling event, which is most recent. After drinking Moscatel, and Prosecco (it comes at a close second) though, I was almost a wine convert, they were so good!
Now before I go on and dwell more on the goodness of Moscatel, which you may be bored about right now, let me tell you more about the event.
Marks and Spencer Philippines, in partnership with Citibank gave the public a chance to indulge in the finest M&S wines during the Wine Tasting Activity held last February 7, at the first level of the M&S store in Greenbelt 5 from 5:00PM to 8:00PM.
Over a hundred people, including M&S Premium cardholders, Citibank cardholders, Nuffnang bloggers including me!, as well as regular shoppers had the opportunity to immerse their senses in the finest selection of M&S wines.
Spot me in the far right! Aqua Longchamp bag!
The event was graced by Chie Gatchalian, Wine Sommelier and Owner of 5 ½ Twists(a wine education and party service). A Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET Awardee),Chie has hosted wine appreciation nights for both private and corporate clients and teaches Basic Wine Appreciation courses as well as more advanced wine classes for a more mature wine-drinking clientele.
Ms. Chie gave a talk on the intricacies of red, white, rosé and sparkling wines and recommended the right pairing of cheese and wine, such as Brie cheese for Chardonnay & any of sparkling wines, Roquefort cheese for Muscatel, Port & any other sweet wine, Edam cheese for Pinot Noir & Riesling and Gouda cheese for Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot. Aside from cheese, she also mentioned which food goes perfectly with a particular type of wine, from the appetizer to main course and dessert, as well as wines that can also be used for cooking and even baking.
She shared the ‘shake-sniff-sip’ technique, a retronasal activity, where you get to release the essence of the wine with the shake, smell the different aromas, then when you sip, the retronasal thing is sort of like gargling but just at the back of the tongue. It gives a rather different wine drinking experience, engaging more senses than the usual gulpor simple sip.
13 bottles of wine were on display during the event, where guests were allowed to roam around and sample them all. During the talk proper however, Ms. Chie led the crowd through a sampling of 10 wines, every time encouraging everyone to do the retronasal technique, and sharing stories here and there. Aside from telling us all what to pair with each of the 10 wines, guests were also guided on how and when to serve wine, how to know if the wine is good, how to please your party guests with wine, among others.
Meet Chardonnay, the world’s most popular wine. I’ve tasted it before, in parties, and this brand was better than what I’ve tried. Thing is, I’m a huge fan of white wine when it’s added in sauces like in pasta, but not much as a drink. I did like it, it was very fruity, with a bit of acidity and smokiness from the barrel, but I wouldn’t go more than 2 glasses of this. It tasted better than Sauvignon Blanc though, which was also pretty popular on the event.
I’m attaching a few photos with the description of each of the wines available, and I hope you try them yourself. If you’re thinking about the price, don’t worry, they’re pretty affordable considering the quality you get. My Muscatel just costs Php450!
All wines are available at M&S stores in Alabang Town Center, Eastwood, Gateway, Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 5, Robinsons Place Manila, Shangri-la Plaza Mall, SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, Trinoma, Abreeza Mall, Davao, Marquee Mall, Ayala CenterCebu, Lim Ket Kai Center and Subic Harbour Point.
This was taken sometime last year, when I was still wearing my beloved happy colors. As you have noticed, I have been posting looks with white tops recently, reasons for which I have not yet disclosed, but I will, soon.
Moving on, this look is typical of me. Bright and sunny, with a print that’s adorable. This can be your shopping day outfit too, easy to take off, and easy to put on again. The plus factor on it is the cute tropical print, which reminded me of the birds in the Pixar film, Rio, hence the title. Well duh, can I not be more obvious? haha.
If you’re wondering where I took this, it’s at the park outside SM Mall of Asia, I thought it was appropriate for me to take my outfit shots there, with the greenery and all. It was pretty hard taking shots though, the park had tons of human traffic, hence a lot of chismoso/chismosa stares. I had to muster up all my blogger confidence to ignore those eyes. Thankfully, I had a few photos that were usable in spite of the people.
I’ve been swamped with a lot of work lately, academics, student council duties, and online shop work, so forgive me if I haven’t been blogging as much as I normally do. Which reminds me, did I already tell you that this year, one of my resolutions is actually to post at least 12 times per month? Well, I achieved that on January, and I’m hoping to maintain that for the whole year, or even surpass that. Cheer me on so I can do it? yes? thank you for always supporting me!

For some odd reason, I picture this look as something a modern day Jane Austen character would wear. This would look good for either Jane or Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice, yes?
The look is conservative, simple, but still interesting, thanks to details here and there. Also, this one is a look you can take from business casual, to flirty date. Just switch up your accessories, and you’re good to go.
I actually wore this out to go to the Times Square Bazaar last weekend. Since I was coming from school, I wanted to wear something that was proper, and still have enough movement for shopping in the afternoon.
I had just received this skirt from Abrille the night before, and because of my excitement, I decided to wrap the idea of my outfit around this skirt. Viola! This is what I came up with.
Simple and sweet, this is also something you can wear when you want to make a good impression on your boyfriend’s parents, but still look fun and youthful.
I added this fedora for that summer vibe and for more dimension to the look as the colors of my outfit are neutral and bordering on boring.
To give the eyes more distractions, I used this mustard belt for color accent, and wore this pretty set of pastel infinity bracelets to accessorize.
To keep the whole look together, a cute pair of doll flats is the way to go. Consistency is key to getting a successful look. Since I already had a theme in mind, from clothing to shoes, they have to be coordinated, but not necessarily matchy matchy. What’s great about this pair is its polka dot print on a weave pattern, thus adding another interesting detail.
Onto the bazaar, here are a few snaps of the event. I went there early, so there wasn’t much activity yet.
Valentine’s themed shoes from DAS
Dainty display for Cuppieland
I got to meet my lovely blog sponsors as well 🙂
Hello Paradise Treats!
Hello Greenlane Shop!
And, with one of the prettiest displays at the bazaar, h.e.a.r.t. by abbey 🙂
Leaving you guys with this jolly photo of me while taking ootd shots. 🙂
I’ve been wearing only white for more than a month now, for reasons I haven’t told you guys yet. I will though, soon. 🙂
For this post, I’ll be showing you guys two sets of photos. I wore the same look to two events I went to this month, and couldn’t decide which set to post, so I decided to post them both. 🙂
I wore this to the wine tasting event hosted by Marks and Spencer at their Greenbelt 5 branch. Since the event was to celebrate M&S’s new wine selections, I thought that I should wear something simple, casual nothing too dressy as it was just a cocktail event, but still effortlessly classy. What do you think? Was I able to pull it off?
While waiting for the wine appreciation workshop to start, I decided to walk around and see if I could squeeze in a bit of shopping. Aldo was nearby so I decided to go in. I found these really pretty red suede sky high pumps which cost only 2100 pesos, but sadly, they ran out of a pair in my size. Boo.
When I get the press kit for the M&S event, I’ll be posting more about their wines, but for now, let’s talk more about my outfit. haha
This peplum top is perfect for lazy days when you are still expected to dress up, even just a little. It just adds more character to an otherwise boring look. yes?

The next set of photos were taken when I visited my high school alma mater for the school fair. My youngest brother is still in Grade 7, so he was the one who toured us around.
Re: my jeans, don’t you think the swallow print is just too adorable? They were made that way so that I had the option to show the swallow print (reverse side) when I fold the end into cuffs, or to just keep it simple and straight without the print. in this case, since the look was too plain already, I decided that the print would be a pleasant surprise, a refreshing take on your typical skinny jeans.
About these shoes, I’ve been waiting for this pair to go on sale ever since I saw them in Aldo, so when I found them in the Robinsons Ermita branch on sale for 1500, and with the last pair in my size, I bought them in a heartbeat. haha. They’re a charming pair right? They look like they’re from Zara or Mango too, like the heels that were trending last season, plus points for that. Another thing, these are just so simple, but also really sexy on my feet, that I just couldn’t resist making my purchase. haha.
in photo: a photobooth pic of me, my brother and my sister, too bad my other brother Nathan wasn’t there, he had night duty for his hospital internship.
I’m sure everyone’s seen this cover on MEGA magazine, and every kikay Archie fan out there prolly already has a copy, like me. 🙂
Are you Team Betty or Team Veronica? I’ve been on team Veronica ever since I read my first Archie double digest, and that loyalty hasn’t wavered since. So when it comes to my birthday wishlist, anything MAC x Veronica Lodge is high up on my list. Anyone who can get me even just one product will really make me happy, haha.
Here are a some of the products I’ve been eyeing online, I hope I get one soon! Dear auntie Elaine, if you read this, please get me one in Sephora SG. puhleeeez? 🙂
In the Veronica line the lipstick comes in Daddy’s Little Girl, which is a mid-tone pink violet with satin finish, in Ronnie Red in bright matte red and in Boyfriend Stealer in deep blackened plum with cremesheen finish. The lipglass is offered in Mall Madness in mid-tone pink violet, in Strawberry Malt in bright red and in Feelin’ So Good in deep blackened plum. As well as a few other products:
And the Betty line:
The accessory line consists of an Archie’s Girls Brush Kit, a coin purse, Young Hearts Mirror, a makeup bag, and a Yours Forever Tote. The mirror and the tote are the online exclusives.
